Banana Bread – The freshly baked Banana Bread has become popularized in the United States since the early 1900s.  The Banana Bread is a sweet bread made with bananas, flour, sugar, butter, eggs and baking soda.  The versatile recipe is easy to modify by substituting or adding ingredients.  Our vacation in Maui encompasses the degustation of delicious banana breads made with local Hawaiian ingredients. Maui’s bakers safeguard their family recipes, passed through generations.  Maui’s banana breads are full of flavor, moist and simply the best.  The Manzano Bananas, also called Apple Bananas, are a secret ingredient.  The Manzano Bananas, native to Central and South America, grow in the tropical climate and volcanic soils of the Hawaii Islands.  The Manzano Bananas are small and firm, and have a sweet, tangy and apple-like flavor.  Melissa’s World Variety Produce, a distributor of specialty produce, sells excellent quality Manzano Bananas grown in Ecuador.  The ripe Manzano Bananas and the Hawaiian pink salt give the bread a natural taste.  Our Banana Bread is flavorful and moist with small chunks of banana.

Preparation Method

Step 1 – The Manzano Bananas are shipped still green.  Place the bananas in a brown paper bag, close lightly and leave them for a few days to ripen.  Crush the soft and ripe bananas with a potato musher to obtain a smooth texture.  Add the sour cream, eggs, melted butter and sugar, and mix the ingredients until well incorporated.

Step 2 – In a separate bowl, mix thoroughly the flour, baking soda and grinded salt, and then add to the banana mixture.  Mix gently with a spatula, but do not overmix to create a lighter banana bread batter.

Step 3 – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (176 degrees Celsius).  Spread the butter inside the bread pan, dust with flour, and then pour the banana bread batter.  Bake the banana bread for 50 minutes on the oven’s middle rack.  Note: Use a toothpick to verify if the bread is baked.

Step 4 – Remove the bread from the oven, leave in the pan for 10 minutes, and then remove the bread from the pan to cool down.  Slice the banana bread and enjoy the flavor of the Manzano bananas.
